Dr. Hempstead is Professor of Medicine and Co-Chief of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology, and is also the O. Wayne Isom Professor of Medicine. She is an internationally recognized expert in intracellular signaling by receptor tyrosine kinases, and her laboratory focuses on the actions of peptide growth factors, the neurotrophins, to regulate cell migration, proliferation and cellular apoptosis. These processes regulate tumor metastasis, and the development of blood vessels during normal development and during tumor growth. These research interests have been supported by the National Institutes of Health, The American Heart Association, and Burroughs Wellcome Fund.
Dr. Hempstead has clinical interests in hemostasis and thrombosis, and treats patients with non-malignant hematologic conditions.
Dr. Hempstead is also the Co-Chief of the Division of Hematology and Medical Oncology at Weill Cornell. The Division consists of over 30 physicians and nurse practitioners, and thirteen independent laboratories focused on basic and translational research in hematology, vascular biology and oncology.
