Dr. Dolca Thomas is co-founder and medical director of the islet cell transplant program. Following completion of her transplant fellowship, she joined our faculty in 2003 and her team performed the very first successful islet cell transplantation in the Tri-state area. Dr. Thomas, a UNOS certified kidney/pancreas transplant nephrologist, specializes in the management and care of diabetic transplant recipients.
Her research focus and expertise are islet cell biology and the molecular and cellular mechanisms of islet cell death in the transplant setting. She was the first to demonstrate that human islets are characterized by a proapoptic profile. She has also investigated whether targeting the mitochondrion with the anti-oxidant SS-31 reduces the apoptotic machinery of islets.
Dr. Thomas' innovative research have earned her numerous awards including the AST/JDFI Fellowship Award (2001-2003); Novartis Young Investigator Award (2001); Robert Wood Johnson Harold Amos Scholar (2003-2007); American Transplant Congress Young Investigator Award (2003); NIH Extramural Award(2003); Michael Wolk Young Investigator Award (2004), JDRF Innovator Award(2006-2007) and the NIH KO8 Mentored Clinical Scientist Development Award (2006-2011).
She is an active member of the American Society of Transplantation, the American Society of Nephrology and the American Diabetes Association.
Dr. Dolca Thomas earned her medical degree from Weill Cornell Medical College and completed her residency in internal medicine and nephrology, and transplant fellowship at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. She received her undergraduate degree from Cornell University.
