Markowitz, John C.
John C. Markowitz M.D. is a Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Cornell University Medical College, a director of the Payne Whitney Clinic Outpatient Psychotherapy Clinic at New York Hospital, an Adjunct Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Columbia University College of Physician & Surgeons, and a Research Psychiatrist at New York State Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Markowitz received his M.D. from Columbia University and served his residency training in psychiatry at the Payne Whitney Clinic. He trained in psychodynamic psychotherapy at the Payne Whitney Clinic; in interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) with the late Dr. Gerald L. Klerman, who developed the treatment; and in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) at Aaron Beck's Center for Cognitive Therapy in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
With Dr. James Kocsis, Dr. Markowitz has researched dysthymic disorder, its treatment, and psychotherapy. With the late Dr. Samuel Perry and Dr. Klerman, he completed a comparative treatment study of IPT, CBT, supportive psychotherapy, and imipramine plus supportive therapy for depressed HIV-positive patients. He is currently conducting studies of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder.
Dr. Markowitz is the author of Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Dysthymic Disorder, co-author with Drs. Klerman and Myrna M. Weissman, Ph.D., of Comprehensive Guide to Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Clinican's Quick Guide to Interpersonal Psychotherapy, and author of more than 200 peer-reviewed articles and chapters.
