The pediatric intensivist leads a multidisciplinary team that works with the patient and his/her family to effect the best outcome possible for the patient. A full complement of all pediatric subspecialists, pediatric critical care nurses, respiratory and physical therapists, social workers, pharmacists, and nutritionists all work together to this end. The intensivist is charged with bringing the full impact of the latest technology, pharmacology, research and experience to the bedside while tempering the practice of state-of-the-art medicine with compassion, humility, and respect.
Patients generally do not choose their intensivist, but many physicians from the greater metropolitan area choose to send over a thousand of their patients per year to the intensivists at the Komansky Center for Children's Health at the New York Weill Cornell Medical Center. The award-winning Pediatric Intensive Care Unit is recognized as delivering exceptional care and has won accolades from patients and their referring physicians.
