Dr. Hartl is the Chief of Spinal Surgery here at Weill Cornell Medical College. He also serves as the Neurosurgeon for the New York Giants. He is a Medical graduate from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Munich, Germany and he completed his
Neurosurgery residency at Weill Cornell Medical College. After finishing a Fellowship in complex spine surgery at the Barrow?s Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona, he re-joined the Department of Neurosurgery at Weill Cornell Medical College as an Attending Surgeon.
Dr. Hartl believes that surgery should be part of a multidisciplinary approach to disease processes. He works very closely with other specialists such as Neurologists, pain specialists and physical therapists in order achieve the best possible results for his patients.


Dr. Hartl specializes in

  • Complex spine procedures on the cervical, thoracic and lumbar spine and the sacrum

  • Minimally invasive spine surgery including

  • Percutaneous and other minimal access approaches for microdiscectomy and fusion procedures

  • Kyphoplasty and vertebroplasty

  • Computer-guided navigation for Spine surgery

  • Surgery of the Craniocervical junction including treatment of patients with rheumatoid arthritis

  • Artificial disc surgery for degenerative diseases of the spine

  • Treatment of patients with head injury and spinal cord injury


Dr. Hartl has lectured and published extensively on the surgical treatment of spine disorders and traumatic brain and spinal cord injury.
