Dr. Valerie L. Johnson is a Pediatric Nephrologist interested in the care and treatment of children with problems such as hematuria/proteinuria as well as kidney disease and disorders involving the kidneys. Dr. Johnson also cares for children who have reached end-stage kidney disease requiring dialysis or kidney transplantation. She, in addition, cares for children with congenital kidney abnormalities as well as high blood pressure and electrolyte disorders.
Dr. Johnson's research interest is in the area of growth of children with kidney failure. She is evaluating how growth hormone therapy allows children with kidney failure to grow better. A number of factors are being evaluated as contributing to the growth failure of these children.
Body composition of children with kidney failure is another area of research interest. Dr. Johnson has received a number of grants from the Genentech Foundation for Growth to support this important work.
Dr. Johnson has also been involved in a number of studies evaluating treatment of high blood pressure in children. In addition, she has been involved in studies of management of anemia in Chronic Kidney Disease and novel therapy for Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome and Membranoproliferative Glomerulonephritis.
